name that tune meme, now with added tunes.

More procrastination! Stolen from two excellent dudettes, [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose and [livejournal.com profile] tardis_stowaway. Gnarly!

(Gnarly is good, right? It's hard to be hip with the kids, these days.)

1. Open up your music player. Hit shuffle.
2. Record the first few lines of the first thirty songs that come up that do not give away the name of the song. Skip instrumentals, but don't skip the embarrassing ones.
3. Make hapless LJ denizens guess the song names and artists. Google is cheating. For musical songs, the name of the musical is acceptable in place of the artist.
4. Least hapless LJ denizen wins admiration. That's right, just like a lobbyist in budget season, the points don't matter.

1. Now the reason we're here, as man and woman
Is to love each other, take care of each other.
When love walks in the room, everybody stand up.
Oh, it's good, good, good,
Like Brigitte Bardot!

Message of Love, The Pretenders. Got by [livejournal.com profile] earlgreytea68

2. What I’m searching for – to tell it straight, I’m trying to build a wall.
Walking by myself down avenues that reek of time to kill.

3. When I was a little girl, only about twelve years old
I couldn’t do nothing to save my doggone soul.
My mama told me the day I was grown,
She said, ‘Sing the blues, child, sing them from now on.’

4. I wandered around and finally found the somebody who
Could make me be true, could make me be blue,
And even be glad just to be sad thinking of you.

It Had to Be You, Harry Nilsson. Got by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose and [livejournal.com profile] chicklet73.

5. I’ve been waiting for you, my dear, I’ve been waiting for you
Over valleys and mountains, it helps to keep counting the days.
And last night felt kind of strange, my dear, last night felt kind of strange,
All the blankets and sheets and the lies through your teeth that I fell through.

6. You like snow, but only if it’s warm.
You like rain, but only if it’s dry.
There’s no sentimental value to the rose that fell on your floor;
There’s no fundamental excuse for the granted I’m taken for.

Wake Up, Alanis Morrisette. Got by[livejournal.com profile] tricksterquinn.

7. I went walking the other day
Everything was going fine
I met a little boy named Billy Joe
And then almost lost my mind.

Mama Said, The Shirelles. Got by [livejournal.com profile] shippygrl.

8. My gears they grind more each day
And I feel like they’re going to grind away.
And the city blocks, they drive me wild
The never-ending mile after mile.

9. It’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song –
You can’t believe it, you were always singing along.
It was so easy, and the words so sweet.
You can’t remember; you try to feel the beat.

Eet, Regina Spektor. Got by [livejournal.com profile] eponymous_rose.

10. I want you to know that I’m happy for you.

Teenage Dream, Katy Perry (and Darren Criss!). Got by [livejournal.com profile] ghostrunner7[livejournal.com profile] ghostrunner7.

12. I rode my bicycle past your window last night
I roller-skated to your door at daylight.

I’m okay alone, but you’ve got something I need.

13. I woke up this morning, a funny taste in my head,
Spackled some butter over my whole grain bread.
Something tastes different, maybe it’s my tongue
Something tastes different, suddenly I’m not so young.

Die Alone, Ingrid Michaelson. Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] gladdecease.

Trees and umbrellas protect us from the new rain
Armies of engineers to analyze the soil
The food we contemplate
The water that we boil

17. Margaret, are you grieving
Over Goldengrove unleaving, by and by.
Leaves, like the things of man, you with your fresh thoughts care for.
Can you as your heart grows older, it will come to such sights much colder
By and by, nor spare a sigh, by and by.

Spring and Fall: To a Young Child, by Natalie Merchant and Gerard Manly Hopkins. Guessed by [livejournal.com profile] uwsannajane.

19. Cause my life's so perfectly funny, that is till it's not.
And we'll be so stupidly happy, till the cannonball drops.
And my dreams are ever so tempting, until they go pop pop...
Chances are that our love is now utterly thoroughly shot.

Perfectly Perfect, Elizabeth and the Catapault. Got by [livejournal.com profile] mylittlepwny.

20. Was an early morning yesterday, I was up before the dawn.

Now that the last month's rent is scheming with the damage deposit.

25. I am a lone wolf, a beauty and a beast,
Both hunter and hunted, soft tongue and sharp teeth.

This meme did not fully expose my occasionally ridiculous taste in music, and for that I apologize.

Oh man... my knowledge of music is apparently shamefully lacking.

#18 is Iko Iko, though I can't for the life of me remember who sang it. I think it was a cover when I heard it when I was a kid.

#23 is Heat Wave. Again, no idea who sang it.

...and that's all I know.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so glad someone got Iko Iko! My version is by the Dixie Cups, but I know it's been covered many, many times. Heat Wave is by the ever-wonderful Martha and the Vandellas.

Well done!

[identity profile] ghostrunner7.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
11 is Teenage Dream, by Katy Perry, god, its embarrassing that I know that, and 15 is Oh, Death, which is traditional, not sure which version you have.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahaha, 11. My version is performed by Darren Criss from Glee, but I'm not sure if that makes it more or less embarrassing for me. ;)

I have two versions of O Death, actually, but the one that came up was Ralph Stanley's from O Brother, Where Art Thou.

[identity profile] ghostrunner7.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually have both the Katy Perry version and the Glee version. How embarrassing is that?

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think at that point it circles back around from embarrassing to awesome again.

[identity profile] chicklet73.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, fun!

#4 is "It Had To Be You". Is it the Harry Connick Jr. version?

#10 is "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morrisette

#18 is "Iko Iko", but I do not know the artist. *hangs head*

I'm very interested to find out what the rest are...

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
#4 happened to be Harry Nilsson, not Harry Connick, but I have that version somewhere, too...

Iko Iko gets covered a lot as well, but my version is by the Dixie Cups.

I'm very interested to find out what the rest are...

After a bit, I'll put up the names and artists of the ones no one gets. Some are a little obscure (or just hard to get from the lyrics alone) but they are some of my favorites. ;)
annissamazing: It doesn't get much more awesome than Martha Jones (Martha smiles)

[personal profile] annissamazing 2011-11-11 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I cannot believe I missed #10. So embarrassed! :D

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:04 pm (UTC)(link)
ALANIS WILL NEVER FORGIVE YOU.

She's going to write an entire album about it, and it will be AWESOME.

[personal profile] annissamazing 2011-11-11 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't wait to find out what we did together in a theater!

[identity profile] eponymous-rose.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
4 is "It Had to Be You" - Billie Holiday? Sinatra? Some other cover?

9 is "Eet" by Regina Spektor

10 is "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette

28 is "Momentum" by Aimee Mann

Aaand... that's all I've got!

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, you got the Regina and Aimee Mann! (And the other two, obviously. I'm just particularly glad about those.) I thought the Eet lyrics were remarkably apropos for this meme. ;)

[identity profile] mylittlepwny.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
14 - O Children, Nick Cave
19 - Perfectly Perfect! By someone I don't know but I GOT THE TITLE RIGHT SO THAT'S WORTH SOMETHING
29 - The Mariner's Revenge, The Decemberists

I knew the Regina one too but someone else got there before me fair and square, gdi. STEALING THIS BRB.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
EXCELLENT WORK, MADAM.

Perfectly Perfect is by Elizabeth and the Catapult, and they are amazingness. True story.

[identity profile] tricksterquinn.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
6: Alanis Morissette - Wake Up (I did have to look at my playlist to remember the name, is that cheating? I was singing a stupid amount of the song without help...)

10: Also Alanis, that one is You Oughta Know. Digging the Alanis. ;)

I enjoyed these, though I'm a little distressed those were all I knew!

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
*engages you in a Jagged Little Pill high five*

[identity profile] tardis-stowaway.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The only ones I knew on here have already been guessed, oh well. However, I am highly amused that there is one song on here that is on both of our lists, but which nobody has yet guessed on mine. (I perhaps should have quoted an extra line or two.)

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know whether to be horrified or amused that I completely missed that song on your list.
gladdecease: (I'm gonna let it shine)

[personal profile] gladdecease 2011-11-11 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh, nobody knew 13 is "Die Alone"? That surprises me. That was the only one I recognized, aside from Katy Perry. Artist's name escapes me... Ingrid something? Oddly pretty song.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, 13 is Die Alone by Ingrid Michaelson. It's one of my favorites of hers. Well spotted!

[identity profile] flecalicious.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I spent ages and ages staring at #27, convinced I knew it, and then my resolve broke and I googled it and no, no, it's really not what I thought it was. The only one I managed to guess was Katy Perry, and that doesn't count. ALAS.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
#27 is a fantastic song, but as far as I know, the artist is pretty obscure. I'm only familiar with him because I saw him perform at a coffee house when I was, like, thirteen, and I bought his CD - which I still cherish to this day. He's a folk singer named Cliff Eberhardt, and he's a pretty much a badass.

[identity profile] uwsannajane.livejournal.com 2011-11-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Posting before I read the other comments - #17 is the first half of Gerard Manley Hopkins's Spring and Fall: To a Young Child." But. Did someone record it as a song or do you have an audio version of the poem? Hmmm.

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm impressed you caught that! Natalie Merchant recently did an album called Leave Your Sleep, which is entirely made up of songs she adapted from 19th and 20th century poetry about childhood. It is awesome.

[identity profile] earlgreytea68.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
#1 is "Message of Love" - the Pretenders

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 07:16 am (UTC)(link)
Indeed!

[identity profile] shippygrl.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
is #7 Mama Said There'd Be Days Like This?

[identity profile] rosa-acicularis.livejournal.com 2011-11-12 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
It surely is!
