CHRISTMAS MEME YAY.

A Christmas meme, festively stolen from [livejournal.com profile] frenchroast.

1. Eggnog or Hot Chocolate?
Hot chocolate, no question. Eggnog kind of creeps me out.

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?
When I was a kid, Santa's present was often the largest, least expected gift that required the most assembly, so my uncle usually came over late on Christmas Eve to help Santa put it together and stick it unwrapped under the tree. Because they were buds, Santa let my uncle wear a suit just like his, eat some of the cookies I left out, and climb around on our roof making reindeer noises and ringing sleigh bells.

I was an observant kid, but otherwise not terribly bright.

3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
I usually think white lights look better, but I'll use any strand of lights that will actually light up.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?
When I was a kid we had a little cartoon mistletoe ornament that had big puckered lips and made kissy noises whenever someone walked under it. The real stuff just doesn't compare.

5. When do you put your decorations up?
Usually about a week before Christmas Eve. Sometimes later.

6. What is your favorite holiday dish?
My aunt makes a mean vat of New England clam chowder.

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child?
It's hard to choose - I was an incredibly spoiled only child, and my family worked really hard to make Christmas special. I remember one year that I came downstairs on Christmas morning to see that my mother had completely redecorated the entire house while I slept, making it look like I'd woken up in some sort of alternate Christmas universe. She probably stayed up all night, but judging by the pictures, it was worth it.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?
I think I was always aware that older kids and adults didn't believe in Santa, but well into my teens I had all sorts of mystical, metaphysical explanations for why they were wrong. I didn't think my presents actually came from a man named Kris Kringle, but I was sure some sort of being matching his basic description existed. I did some pretty substantive research to back up my theories; I probably still have my notes somewhere.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?
We spent a couple of Christmases with family friends who opened all their gifts on Christmas Eve, so we compromised and did it about half and half. We've stuck more or less with that.

10. How do you decorate your Christmas tree?
White lights, red wood bead garlands, some random, much-loved ornaments that have survived the move from the house I grew up in - though this year my aunt has a bunch of Victorian ornaments, so we might do something a bit steampunk.

11. Snow! Love it or Dread it?
Portland is completely unable to deal with snow, and the last time we had a white Christmas here, I ended up trapped in the city and couldn't even get to the suburbs to see my mom. I had fun with my roommates, but we were all a little bitter about that one. If Multnomah County invests in a few more snow plows, I'll wear my pajamas inside out all December to get us a little.

12. Can you ice skate?
I can skate fine. It's the stopping I've yet to master.

13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
Ever since I hit about twelve my mom has done most of her shopping for me by giving me a wad of cash and setting me loose in a bookstore for a day. She's pretty fantastic.

14. What’s the most important thing about the holidays for you?
It's not Christmas unless I get to watch White Christmas with my mom. After that, everything else is just a bonus. As a kid, I was all about the tree.

15. What is your favorite holiday dessert?
My mom usually makes these amazing no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies. They sort of look like turds, but they're my favorite.

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
Wrapping presents while listening to Christmas music or watching Christmas movies.

17. What tops your tree?
A star of some kind, usually. Angels kinda creep me out - though we did have this awesome one that flew around the top of the tree in circles. It started to make this horrible grinding sound, though, so we had to retire it.

18. Which do you prefer giving or receiving?
Giving, though I didn't inherit my mother's freaky gift buying psychic powers. But I'm not going to lie to you - I love unwrapping my own presents too.

19. Candy Canes?
Yes, please! I'm not big on candy as a general rule, but when it comes to candy canes I'm a traditionalist.

20. Favorite Christmas show?
Um. I'm really, really into Christmas movies. How about a top ten?

10. The Shop Around the Corner
9. The Ref
8. Babes in Toyland/March of the Wooden Soldiers
7. Scrooged
6. The Life & Adventures of Santa Claus
5. The Bishop's Wife
4. How The Grinch Stole Christmas (animated original)
3. Christmas in Connecticut
2. Muppet Christmas Carol
1. White Christmas

And that's not even counting favorite Christmas episodes of TV shows like West Wing, Sports Night, Buffy, M*A*S*H, Community, and others.

21. Saddest Christmas song?
I'll Be Home for Christmas, particularly when sung by Alan Alda in M*A*S*H.

22. What is your favorite Christmas song?
IMPOSSIBLE. But here's a few:

I'm going to stop before youtube eats me alive.
