Two commentaries promised in this meme! I quite enjoyed doing these, brief as they are, and I'd be happy to do more. Though after these you might all wash your hands of me; it's hard to say.

commentaries, what? )

In other news, I've been compulsively listening to Bowie's Life on Mars on repeat for the last two hours, and every two minutes or so I get intensely teary and emotional about SAM TYLER and GENE HUNT and THAT BEAUTIFUL SHOW. In a few minutes I intend to switch over to Ashes to Ashes and OH ALEX DRAKE I LOVE YOU LIKE BREATHING.

I might be a little premenstrual. Just a smidge.

If someone doesn't make a freakin' amazing biopic about the life of Eartha Kitt, and soon, I will be deeply annoyed and disappointed.

You just don't get more badass than Eartha. Her life story has it all -- drama, heartbreak, Harlem, Paris. Dancing, singing, Batman, Orson Welles. For god's sake, the woman made Lady Bird Johnson cry at a White House luncheon. (The first lady asked Kitt what she thought about the Vietnam War, and Kitt said, "You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed. No wonder the kids rebel and take pot." TALK ABOUT TELLING TRUTH TO POWER, HELLO AWESOME.)

She was blacklisted in the States for years (had her phones tapped and her house bugged and everything -- overreact much, LBJ?) and then returned triumphant after years of success in Europe, and then continued to be consistently badass, talented, and generally fabulous until her death of colon cancer in 2008.

Think of the music. Of the purring. Of the badassedness. And if no one else writes it, dammit, I will.

While I would have been overjoyed to learn that the rumors of a Lady Gaga Doctor Who appearance were true, my first choice for a Yank pop singer guest star would be the fabulous Janelle Monae:

Something tells me she'd fit in just fine.

ETA: OMG. Apparently she's already been in an episode of Stargate: Universe, which -- um, no. Not even for her.

You know you're in Obsessive Fic Mode when you take a moment to fiddle with your iTunes writing playlist and find yourself thinking, "Wow. I should really put together a fanmix for this story. That'd be awesome."

*shakes head and wanders away, muttering*

On an entirely unrelated note: Was I the only person on earth who didn't realize that Moby is actually related to Herman Melville?

How nutty is that?

I spent about an hour today discussing the work and lives of the Beatles with two four-year-olds.

I love my job.

In unrelated news, this sign recently appeared on campus. I know not why; I know only that my Freudian English lit lovin' brain thinks it the funniest thing ever. (Also, I love pink.)
