a lazy afternoon fan fiction meme.

Nabbed from [personal profile] elliptic_eye because I am experiencing issues of motivation and focus, and nothing focuses the mind quite like talking about yourself.

What's the last thing you wrote?

Last story I finished was The Doctor Complex. Last thing I wrote...a few sentences added to Bananafic, probably.

Was it any good?

The few sentences? No, actually. I'll probably chuck them on my next drive by.

What's the first thing you ever wrote that you still have?

Well, my mother and I are unforgivable hoarders, so somewhere in my ancestral home back East you can find a series of adventure stories staring myself and giant black snake named Eddie that I dictated to my mother in the second grade.

(I was a late bloomer with an attitude problem and a side ponytail. He was a six-foot snake with gravitas and a dark past. We fought crime.)

Write poetry?

Only when forced.

Angsty poetry?

Worse. In my misspent youth, I wrote happy poetry. About trees.

Most fun character you ever wrote?

The Master, no question. I'm going to sit here and try not to think about what that says about me.

Most annoying character you ever wrote?

Hmm. This is an unexpectedly difficult question. Probably because I don't really write that many characters to begin with. Reggie Tyler from Bananafic is sort of deliberately annoying, I guess?

Best plot you ever wrote?

God, not the 'p' word. All my plotty fics are as yet unfinished. Heartbreak Hotel, Tomorrow, the sequel to Good Night -- all plot-tacular, all languishing in Work In Progress Purgatory.

Coolest plot twist you ever wrote?

I don't know if it counts as a twist, but I'm pretty pleased with the suddenness of the appearance of the Bad Wolf in Do I Twist, Do I Fold.

How often do you get writer's block?

I don't so much get blocked as become extremely cranky with one story and wander off to a different one. I'm not blocked -- I'm fickle.

How do you fix it?

Generous offerings to the gods.

Do you type or write by hand?

For larger projects I make notes by hand as I write, but the actual writing itself has to be done on a computer.

Do you save everything you write?

Usually, yes. You never know when you might need something.

Do you ever go back to an old idea long after you abandoned it?

Surely do. Good Night is an example of my typical inability to let these things disappear into the ether.

What's your favorite thing that you've written?

It's not perfect, but I'm still very fond of a short story I wrote called The Third Woe Comes Quickly, about apocalypse mythology and mothers and a teenage boy who works in a grocery store. As far as fic is concerned, I'm still very happy with how the post Doomsday fic Landing turned out.

What's everyone else's favorite thing that you've written?

That'd be easier for "everyone else" to answer, but I'd guess Days and Hours or But Broken Lights, probably.

Do you ever show people your work?

Surely do. Fan fic is for the internet peeps only, though.

Who's your favorite constructive critic?

I wouldn't be nowhere without beta extraordinaire [personal profile] jlrpuck, and [personal profile] eponymous_rose rocks the concrit like whoa.

Did you ever write a novel?

Never have I ever in my long-legged life.

Have you ever written fantasy, sci-fi, or horror?

Yep, yep, and yep.

Ever written romance or teen angsty drama?

Oh yes.

What's one genre you have never written, and probably never will?

Well, let's have a look-see. I've tried my hand at romantic comedy, tragedy, sex farce, regular farce, babyfic, horror, crime drama, political drama, "teen angsty drama", morality plays, children's stories, poetry, and freaky dream fic.

Oh! You know what I've yet to do and may never even try? PWP smut.

I think I'd get distracted and throw in a stampede of alien elephants by accident. Talk about coitus interruptus.

How many writing projects are you working on right now?

Eight. Hey, that's not so bad, is it?

Do you want to write for a living?

Yes, please. Are you hiring?

Have you ever written something for a magazine or newspaper?

Small potatoes stuff, yeah. (Hee. Potatoes.)

Have you ever won an award for your writing?

Yep. (Hey, some people like poetry about trees.)

Ever written something in script or play format?

I started writing because of my interest in theatre, so yes -- very much so.

What is your favorite word?

Ostrich.

Do you ever write based on yourself?

Of course. All the time.

Which of your characters most resembles you?

My original characters are usually nothing like me at all, which makes them considerably more interesting to write.

Where do you get ideas for your characters?

People watching, usually. Sometimes I like to flip through catalogs and magazines and find random pictures of people and objects that appeal to me. But all the best ideas are accidents.

Do you ever write based on your dreams?

Don't think I have.

Do you prefer happy endings, sad endings, or cliff-hangers?

Give me an ending that's all three at once and I'll be happy.

Have you ever written anything based on an artwork you've seen?

Oh yes, any number of times. You'd be surprised how inspirational those paintings fastened to the wall over your hotel bed can be.

Are you concerned with spelling and grammar as you write?

I don't think the 'concerned' is quite the word you're looking for. 'Obsessed', more like.

Ever write something entirely in chatspeak?

Why on earth would I do that?

Does music help you write?

Absolutely. I always listen to music when I write. ABBA or Aqua, usually.

Are people surprised and confused when they find out you write well?

Not since I started wearing my "I'm a creative genius; Ask me how!" name tag.

Quote something you've written:

“Do you have many?”

His cool fingers at the swell of her jaw; she fought to keep her voice even. “Sorry, I…many what?”

“Scars.”

She opened her eyes and sat back, pulling away to look at him properly. The evening breeze blew her hair into her face, and he helped her push it behind her ears with one hand, his fingers tangling in the knotted strands. She met his steady gaze and understood that this was not an idle question. “A few,” she said after a moment’s hesitation. “But that’s life without a dermal regenerator, I suppose.”
