hee-haw.
Much to my amazement, I am completely in love with today's episode of Merlin. I was dreading it, actually considered not watching it at all, but I'm so glad I did. I can't remember the last time I enjoyed this show so much.
Richard Wilson was what made all that absurdity work, honestly, though everyone was spectacularly funny. THE HEAD SLAPPING SCENE, OH MY GOD. Even the farting scene worked for me, because everyone played it so freakin' straight and Uther's face, sweet Jesus. It was a work of art. And Gwen's embarrassment, and Merlin making the delightfully unexpected, rational point that, "it's a just a fart, everyone does it, and if he likes you he likes you." And Gwen and Merlin, working as a team! Giggling about donkey!Arthur! Yes, that's probably what I enjoyed so much about this -- character interaction, series one style. Oh, and watching Arthur's face as Merlin was accused, his obvious hope when Merlin says that Gaius isn't Gaius, that's he's innocent -- Arthur was perfect in this, arrogant and intelligent and more a friend and a prince than a bully, for once.
AND THE LOOK ON HIS FACE AS GWEN SCRATCHED THE EARS. I WILL NEVER FORGET IT.
And I thought I was going to hate this episode. I will never underestimate Richard Wilson ever again.
Now if I could just figure out where the crap Morgana's smirky cartoon evil came from, I would be able to love this ridiculous show as I once did.
